The historic towers

Asinelli Tower and Garisenda Tower

A short walk from Piazza Maggiore, the most famous and iconic symbols of Bologna are the two leaning towers: the Asinelli Tower and the Garisenda Tower, built in the 12th century. Originally over a hundred, about twenty still stand today, remnants of an era when the verticality of towers was a clear status symbol for powerful noble families.

The Asinelli Tower, the taller of the two at 97 metres, offers visitors the opportunity to climb its 498 steps. Once at the top, the panoramic "bird's-eye" view provides a breathtaking experience, allowing you to admire Bologna and its red rooftops stretching to the horizon. A unique chance to immerse yourself in the history and architectural beauty of this ancient university city.

Moreover...

Stroll along the porticoes, a unique labyrinth in the world extending over 40 kilometres!

For a deeper cultural immersion, visit the National Gallery of Bologna, which houses a valuable collection of artwork from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and the Civic Archaeological Museum, which tells the city's millennia-old story through Etruscan, Roman, and medieval artefacts.

The Bolognese Tortellini

A poem about the famous Tortellini, Bologna's icon!

What a refined food
Is the Bolognese Tortellini:
In capon broth,
You can eat it in one bite,
If you add cream or ragù,
You’ll enjoy it even more.

With eggs and flour,
The dough becomes divine,
Well-rolled with a rolling pin,
That’s the secret, so to speak.

The filling is so rich:
Various meats mixed together
And Parma’s fine ham,
Especially the cheese,
Grated Parmesan,
All well blended
With an egg, pepper, salt,
And a touch of nutmeg in the end.

On a twisted little finger,
Beautiful, proud, well-formed,
It resembles the navel
Of women... and I’ll say no more.

Then, if you want to finish well
This meal, it’s wise
To sip slowly
That good wine that gives you a buzz,
Sparkling and vigorous,
That is Lambrusco... and good rest!
